How to apply for registration of a vehicle in temporary transit

The following vehicles can be registered in the Principality in the temporary transit (TT) series:

• Vehicles travelling free of customs duties
• Motor vehicles belonging to persons whose main residence is outside the European Union and Monaco, who are only in the Principality for a temporary stay and have no gainful or remunerated occupation there

This registration applies to vehicles in one of the cases listed below:

• New vehicles, of foreign makes other than French, delivered in the Principality to these persons and intended to be re-exported at the end of their stay
• New vehicles, of French manufacture, delivered in the Principality with tax exemption to the above-mentioned persons and intended to be exported at the end of their stay
• Vehicles of foreign origin, resold after approval by the customs administration by a person benefiting from the temporary import scheme to another person who also fulfils the necessary conditions to benefit from this scheme
• Vehicles of foreign origin, registered outside the Principality or French territory and belonging to persons who, having permanently left the territory where the vehicle was registered, are temporarily staying in the Principality
• Vehicles of foreign origin belonging to tourists, used during their stay in the Principality by the latter and put into storage outside these periods of a stay

All registrations are recorded in a register of registrations and give rise to the issue of a certificate and two front and rear number plates bearing a sticker.  The only exceptions are trailers, quadricycles, motorcycles, mopeds and similar vehicles that have only one rear registration plate; however, a front registration plate may be issued on request.

The words "temporary transit" are shown on the registration certificate.

The registration plates must be fixed so that they are irremovable in the places provided for this purpose.

The certificate and registration plates indicate the number assigned to the vehicle, which is comprised of the letters TT followed by a group of two digits.

The maximum duration of registration in the temporary transit series is limited to one year and is issued subject to compliance with the customs provisions;  registration in the TT series is subject to completion of the formalities resulting from the Franco-Monegasque customs agreement of 13 May 1963.

The application to register must be sent to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office using the appropriate forms, duly completed and signed on the original by the owner of the vehicle.

All applications to register a vehicle must be accompanied by the following documents:

• The form (see step 1 Formulating the request)
• A copy of your valid passport
• The original certificate of accommodation at the hotel mentioned on the hotel's letterhead, duly dated and signed, specifying the duration of the applicant's stay (including the date of purchase of the vehicle)
• Or the original  sworn certificate from the host, duly dated and signed and specifying the duration of the applicant's stay (including the date of purchase of the vehicle)
• The Customs certificate, drawn up in accordance with model 846 B and issued by the French Customs Authority
• The original documents relating to the vehicle concerned, a list of which is available in step 2 (Collating the documents) of the procedures: "How to register a new vehicle" and "How to register a used vehicle"
• In the case of procedures carried out by a third party, a mandate, signed by the principal and accompanied by supporting documents showing proof of these persons' identities. It should specify that the mandate allows the representative to submit the progress of the principal’s application(s), but not to sign documents instead of the principal
• The payment, to be made by cash, cheque or postal order (clearable in Monaco or France), made out to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office and Visa or Mastercard bank cards only, in accordance with the current fee schedule

The staff of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office will be waiting for you at the time of the appointment;  you should bring with you the documents listed in steps 1 and 2.

The certificate and registration plates, if applicable, are available within 72 hours by appointment arranged by the customer manager at the end of the interview and on presentation of the payment receipt (invoice) and an identity document.
